Terwijl ik als een razende de één na de andere atleet aan het interviewen was tijdens de Europese Kampioenschappen 2016 kreeg ik een berichtje van ene Paul binnen. Tussen de EK gekte door probeerde ik mijn hersenen te laten werken en me te concentreren op het berichtje dat zojuist binnenkwam waaien. ´Paul Zwama. Zwama. Paul. Waar ken ik die gast ook al weer van?´ En toen viel het muntje.

En hier zitten we dan; bijna 2 maanden en heel wat pittige trainingen verder. Paul Zwama is mijn trainer tijdens de marathon 2016 en in dit artikeltje zal ik een tikkeltje verder ingaan op de meneer hemzelf. Want wie schuilt er achter mijn hardlooptrainingen?
Waarom niet?
´Als jij op dit moment nog niet je droom achterna loopt wil ik je één vraag stellen… Waarom niet? Wat houdt jou tegen om te stoppen met wat je doet en je dromen te realiseren? Wil je over 20 jaar terugkijken op je leven met spijt? Ik niet! Veel mensen volgen hun dromen niet omdat het makkelijker is om in de huidige situatie te blijven. Een goed leven is het grootste gevaar voor het hebben van een geweldig leven.
Ik wil alles uit mijn atletiek carrière halen de komende 5 jaar en het zou geweldig zijn als mijn carrière eindigt in Tokio. Bovenal wil ik mijzelf in de spiegel kunnen aankijken, wetende dat ik er alles aan gedaan heb om de droom te realiseren.´ – Paul Zwama, www.paulzwama.com
Twee verschillende doelen, één liefde: hardlopen.
Na bovenste prachtige woorden, die vrijwel direct in je beeld ploppen als je zijn persoonlijke website bezoekt, was ik direct verkocht. Paul en ik zitten wat dat betreft hetzelfde in elkaar: we houden van hardlopen, hebben beiden een groot doel voor ogen & zijn vastberaden dit doel hoe dan ook te halen. Kosten wat het kost. Wellicht is de één een tikkeltje sneller dan de ander, maar hey, verschil moet er wezen.
Précies wat ik nodig heb
Wat ik zo bewonder aan deze man? Dat ik op bovenstaande foto nog naast een manke Nelus stond (pardon my French, Paul), en hij nu alweer up & running is. Hij laat me realiseren dat we ook maar ´mensen´ zijn en dat het leven nou eenmaal met ups & downs komt. Na een zware achillespees operatie en twee weken volledige rust zijn de eerste meters weer een feit. Alsof er niets is gebeurd vliegt (of rent) meneer verder naar zijn droom: Tokio 2020. Precies wat ik nodig heb. Iemand die doorzet, z´n hoofd erbij houdt, maar laat zien dat motivatie & hoop één van de belangrijkste aspecten zijn van een sporten.
Ja, met Paul durfde ik deze marathonstrijd zékers aan.
